The accommodation aspect of the system becomes operational in 2013.

Basically, accommodation locales will be divided into several categories. Within each category, ratings from one to five stars may be awarded, as is generally known. The criteria, as well as information on fees, will be available in 2013.

Among aspects covered by the criteria are:

  • General appearance and ambience
  • Hygiene
  • Service, conduct and caring for guests
  • Facilities and equipment
  • Meals
  • Environment and community
  • General business practice
  • In addition, all operators must accept the VAKINN Code of Ethics.

Current star rating

Since the year 2000, the Icelandic Tourist Board has been in charge of the star rating of accommodation, basing its procedures on a Danish example from HORESTA. Currently, nearly half the tourist accommodation in Iceland is subject to this rating. The Icelandic Tourist Board has also overseen the star rating of camping sites. VAKINN will take over the management of both those categories, which will be assimilated to its assessment procedures.
