Quality criteria for accommodation
Vakinn's quality criteria for hotels are based on criteria published by Hotelstars Union, hotelstars.eu. Quality criteria for other categories of accommodation are based on Qualmark - New Zealand tourism's official mark of quality.

Operators seeking independent accreditation of their restaurant or catering facilities must fulfil the specific quality criteria for catering.
Quality criteria for all categories of accommodation address the following factors:
- Immediate environment and approach
- Customer service
- Facilities and equipment
- Recreation/leisure activities
- Company management
- History and culture
All companies must also agree to the Vakinn Code of Ethics.
Regardless of category, all accommodation must fulfil minimum criteria (indicated by L) that can account for a varying number of points and can differ between categories and star classification. Increasing number of stars; increasing demands. Given that relevant minimum criteria have been met, the total number of points awarded determines the star rating of the accommodation. All categories of accommodation can be awarded from one to five stars, with the possibility of a superior ranking for hotels.
Names of sections within each set of criteria may vary between accommodation categories. All criteria are however based on the same fundamental principle; to further professionalism by means of increased quality, safety and environmental awareness, regarding services and facilities for customers as well as company staff.
